Experience · Istria & Adriatic Coast

Istria — Tuscany with the sea

The Istrian peninsula is one of Europe's most extraordinary destinations — a compact world of medieval hilltop towns, emerald vineyards, ancient olive groves, and the blue Adriatic. World-class truffles, award-winning olive oil, and exceptional wines. Just 2 hours from Ljubljana. A day trip or a week — both make perfect sense.

"Istria is the meeting point of two worlds — the Mediterranean warmth of Italy and the forested hills of Central Europe. Its food, wine, and landscapes are unlike anywhere else in Europe."

Four reasons Istria is extraordinary

Istria has been shaped by Illyrians, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Austro-Hungarians — each leaving their mark on the food, wine, architecture, and culture of this remarkable peninsula.

🍄
Truffles
The coveted white truffle — the same as you find in Piedmont — is a local speciality. Motovun Forest produces some of the finest truffles in Europe. Both white (autumn) and black (year-round) varieties.
🫒
Olive Oil
In the years 2016–2022, the famous Italian yearbook "Flos Olei" awarded Istria as the best olive oil region in the world — with over 80 producers in the global Top 500.
🍷
Wine
Over 2,300 years of cultivation of wine grapes, with around 200 wineries constantly building up their quality and reputation. Malvazija, Teran, Refošk, and indigenous varieties are the signature wines.
🌊
Sea & Coast
Crystal-clear Adriatic, ancient port towns, hidden coves, and the freshest seafood — oysters, sea bass, squid, and octopus from the local boats. The coast is magical at sunset.
Mesta & kraji

The best towns & villages

Istria packs an extraordinary density of beautiful places into a small area — coastal gems and medieval hilltop villages, each with its own character and cuisine.

Rovinj
Rovinj is often considered one of the most beautiful towns in Croatia. A walk through its old town, narrow cobbled streets, and a sunset by the sea will be one of the most memorable moments of your trip. The old town sits on a peninsula jutting into the Adriatic — a labyrinth of Venetian buildings climbing to the hilltop Church of St Euphemia. One of the most photographed towns in Europe.

The Pula Arena is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world and one of Croatia's most iconic historical landmarks — still hosting concerts, festivals, and cultural events. Founded by the Romans, Pula is a living ancient city — with a triumphal arch, Roman forum, and 2,000-year-old city walls still intact alongside modern cafés and restaurants.

Poreč
Poreč is home to the Euphrasian Basilica — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the finest Byzantine mosaics outside Ravenna, dating to the 6th century. The basilica was built starting in the 6th century and its golden mosaics are breathtaking. The old town grid follows the original Roman street plan. Every May, the Vinistra wine festival brings 90+ Istrian wineries together here.

Motovun
Motovun is central Istria's most popular destination. From the fortifications, you have spectacular views over the Mirna Valley, with its lush vineyards and oak forests loved by truffle hunters. The medieval walled town sits on a steep hill above the Motovun Forest — the world's most productive truffle forest. Restaurant Zigante here is famous for incorporating truffles into every single dish — including ice cream.

Grožnjan
One of Istria's most charming hilltop villages — a medieval town that was abandoned in the 1960s and reinvented as an artists' colony. Today it is home to galleries, studios, and music festivals. Inland Istria's undulating hills support vineyards, olive groves and oak forests, overlooked by medieval-walled hilltowns such as Motovun and Grožnjan. Near excellent wineries including Kozlović and Kabola.

🏘️ Smallest town · Medieval
Hum
Hum claims to be the world's smallest town — with a permanent population of around 30 people behind its ancient city walls. The Glagolitic Alley leads to this remarkable medieval gem. Known for Biska — the traditional Istrian mistletoe brandy distilled here. Biska Distillery in Hum is known for its traditional Istrian brandy. A unique and unforgettable stop on any Istrian itinerary.
