Capital · Pop. 295,000 · Founded as Emona, 14 AD
Ljubljana is a compact, walkable capital where baroque old town, Roman ruins, and Art Nouveau architecture coexist within a few minutes' walk. Founded by the Romans as Emona in 14 AD, the city has been shaped by every major European civilisation. Today it is one of Europe's greenest and most liveable capitals — car-free, café-lined, and buzzing with culture.

Ptuj
Oldest city in Slovenia · Founded 69 AD · Poetovio
Ptuj is a place where residents tell stories from the Roman era onwards, and the 1376 city statute testifies that this is one of the oldest cities in Slovenia. Known to the Romans as Poetovio, Ptuj was one of the most important Roman cities on the Danube route — larger than Vienna at the time. Today its hilltop castle dominates the Drava River, its streets are lined with Roman artefacts, and every February the mystical Kurentovanje carnival fills the streets with sheepskin-clad figures chasing away winter.

The city's Lent quarter along the river is one of the most atmospheric urban spaces in the region, and the Gothic Town Hall on the main square dates to 1515.
