The quarry

Slovenia's legendary fish

The Soča and its tributaries are home to some of the most prized fly fishing species in Europe. The Marble Trout — endemic to this river system — is the holy grail for serious anglers worldwide.

🐟
Marble Trout
Salmo marmoratus · Soška postrv
The Marble Trout is the trout family's biggest and most iconic representative. It can grow up to 130cm in length and 22kg in weight, with a distinct olive-green marble pattern. Native almost exclusively to the Soča basin — it is the primary reason serious anglers travel from around the world to Slovenia. A powerful, selective, technically demanding fish that rewards patience and skill.

🐠
Grayling
Thymallus thymallus · Lipan
The Grayling is one of Europe's most popular fly-fishing species, which has seen quite a steep decline in population around the continent — but is well-preserved in Slovenia's waters. Rises beautifully to dry flies and is considered by many the most elegant of all fly fishing quarry. The Soča grayling is a slightly different subspecies to those found elsewhere in Europe.
Dry fly specialist Best: Spring & autumn

Brown & Rainbow Trout
Salmo trutta · Oncorhynchus mykiss
Both species thrive throughout the Soča system and its tributaries. The Rainbow Trout easily adapts to new environments, making it plentiful in Slovenia's rivers. Wild rainbows up to 70cm are caught regularly — excellent sport for beginners and experienced anglers alike. Brown trout are native to the Soča and can reach impressive sizes in the deeper pools.
